The Science of Transition Meltdowns
When a child is deeply absorbed in an activity (whether building LEGO, playing outside, or watching a screen), shifting their focus requires shifting their neurological state. When adults give sudden abrupt demands, the child's nervous system interprets the interruption as an acute stressor.
The 'Join Before You Direct' Principle
Before asking your child to switch tasks, step physically into their world for 60 seconds. Sit beside them, observe what they are doing, and make one supportive comment ("Wow, you built a really tall tower!"). Once you have established connection, introduce the upcoming shift.
Visual & Tactile Transition Bridges
Give children an object or small ritual that carries them across the transition threshold. For instance, letting them carry a favorite toy to the car or holding a countdown chime timer provides sensory grounding during the shift.
